Around the farm - 29 September 2019
Each week we send out a newsletter to our regular customers reminding them that the New Life Farm store is open (if you’re interested in buying from the farm visit the shop here - shop opens on a Sunday morning for orders to be collected the following Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday).
We’ve had contact from a lot of folks who want to stay updated on the farm’s journey so we figured the best way to do this would be a weekly blog post :)
Over the last week we enjoyed some more rain and some beautiful sunshine. We've been busy continuing to prepare and plant more beds in our new section of garden up the back along with growing spring and summer seedlings ready for planting out into the garden soon.
We’ve also been spending some time finishing off the next stage of our wash and pack shed. Expanding this area has been an important piece of the puzzle as we grow, harvest and process more and more produce every week! We've been tweaking it over the past 4 weeks, paying attention to making it more functional and we're really happy with where we've got to.
Our battle with rodents in the seed house has been ongoing but with a range of different traps and devices used to catch and deter the little buggers we seem to be winning.
We also had a shearer come out to the farm this week to shear the sheep and give them some general maintenance. We have four dorpers. We’d heard that dorpers didn’t require shearing which was a lot of the appeal of getting these guys but as these sheep are F1s, their fleece doesn’t shed fully so we needed to bring in a shearer for the job.
We were very grateful to learn some tips from Dave the shearer and we were delighted to hear that our sheep were in tip top condition, very healthy and well fed!
We have been enjoying veg on the barbecue once again over the last week making the most of the winter veg whilst it's still available. Turnips, swedes, broccoli, fennel, beets, chunks of leek and even some baby carrots that are just coming on - tossed in a good quality olive oil, salt and pepper and thrown on the BBQ. We enjoy it on it's own or with a bit of chicken thrown on the BBQ too.
We'd like to say a big shout out and thanks to all of our cafe supporters.
If you’re out and about this week and you're looking for a good feed please drop into Beachstone in Sapphire, Bluebottles and Anchor Bar in Woopi, the Emerald Beach General Store and The Happy Frog. These legends support us in buying weekly produce to serve up to their customers.
Happy Frog also recently asked us to write a blog for their website - you can check it out here.
